Christopher Brown, RPT
In 1973, Chris graduated as a music major from Williams College. Later, at Berklee College of Music, he was hired by his teacher Tom Sheehan to work on college pianos. Soon he joined a local rebuilding shop and finally completed his piano technology apprenticeship with two years at North Bennet Street School under Bill Garlick and David Betts.
In 1982, Chris hung up his shingle in Concord, MA, where for twenty-three years he split his time between tuning and repair work in customers' homes and rebuilding work in a shop he built onto the side of his house.
Chris came to specialize in action work. In 2005, he moved to Littleton, MA where a converted carriage barn offered more work area, a large office space, a small showroom, and abundant storage. The new shop was set up specifically for the restoration and fitting of piano actions.
Around this time, Chris founded the first iteration of The Piano Rebuilders consortium with fellow member Mike Morvan. Their team of experts provide highest quality rebuilding services, each member specializing in a part of the process.
Chris currently designs and makes tools for piano technicians (TPR Tools, LLC), offers local piano services to the Boston Metro-west area (with the assistance of Kazuo "Yoshi" Yoshizaki, RPT and Xiaodan Liu, RPT), and restores piano actions for both Boston retail customers and the trade.
Chris is a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) in the Boston Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild. In past years, he edited their monthly newsletter, News & Notes. He also teaches and exhibits his tools on a regular basis.
